The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2 are two of the best Pixar movies and are responsible for making the series Pixar’s best franchise. When Bob Parr gets the opportunity to return to being Mr. Incredible years after superheroes were forced into retirement, he takes it without informing his wife, ex-superhero Elastagirl, or his children. But, keeping secrets only works in his favor for so long, and this journey kicks off the entire Parr family diving into superhero work. The first movie works perfectly as a stand-alone. There was no need for a sequel to tie up loose ends as the film completes the main arcs without trouble. However, The Incredibles 2 justifies existing anyway.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Over a decade after the original film, The Incredibles 2 swung into theaters, exciting long-time fans and breaking records. Luckily, the movie did not disappoint. The Incredibles 2 kept everything that worked from the first movie and used it in the sequel while also having the film speak about world issues. For example, the sequel questions the law, asking if it should be followed just because it is a law, even if it holds wrongful content. Fan-favorite supporting characters like Frozone and Edna Mode also returned to help the movie be its best.

It’s A Great Superhero Story

If you’re in the mood for a fun superhero movie, but not interested in the live-action content of the MCU or DCEU, The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2 are fantastic superhero movies, with or without comparison to others in the genre. For Mr. Incredible, Elastagirl, and Frozone, it is a return to service and helping people. But, for Violet and Dash, it is also an origin story of their roles in helping save the world. In addition, Syndrome and Evelyn are exciting and worthy villains of the films.

Syndrome takes on a brilliant story of a long-time brewing revenge in his desire to prove himself to a hero who did not have time for him. Evelyn expresses her anger toward superheroes for how they had let down her family in the past. The Parr family and Frozone use their powers creatively and in ways that help drive the action scenes forward.

A Justified Sequel

The Incredibles may not have needed a sequel, but The Incredibles 2 proved it was a good thing one came along anyway. The Incredibles 2 does not make the mistake of re-creating the first movie. Instead, it flips the script, having Elastagirl be the main hero in a story about proving that superheroes are a valuable part of society and should no longer be outlawed.

The Incredibles 2 includes the comedic elements of Bob struggling to understand Dash’s math homework, not connecting with Violet as she grows up, and inability to handle Jack-Jack’s energy and varied array of new powers. But, The Incredibles 2 never feels like a movie that should not exist and instead raises the bar for what Pixar sequels are capable of.

The Family Dynamic

The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2 are perfectly family-friendly films, partly related to how the Parr family is developed. Bob and Helen never come across as an unrealistically happy and in sync couple. They are so glad for each other and support each other, but they also argue, debate, and fight like anyone else. When it comes to their kids, Bob and Helen try to put that same mentality to them, avoiding being too overprotective. Dash and Violet never come across as only getting along or fighting all the time. Instead, they are a realistic mix of supporting each other while getting on the other’s nerves. The Parr family is so fun to watch because they feel like a relatable family. They are the heart of the story throughout The Incredibles and The Incredibles 2.

The Iconic Supporting Characters

Is there a better supporting character in Pixar than Edna Mode? Edna is a powerhouse fashion expert on superhero outfits. She refuses to design capes after so many deaths involved them as a cause. Instead, she is excited by the potential of a new look for the entire Parr family. Edna strikes up a comically unexpected friendship with Jack-Jack. She has some of the best dialogue and moments in both films, being the best every time she appears on the screen.

Frozone might be Bob’s best friend, but the moment that solidified him as one of Pixar’s best supporting characters came from his unforgettable argument with his wife over his missing super suit. Unfortunately, The Incredibles 2 never expanded on their relationship or showed Frozone and his wife interacting on-screen. However, the first film also gets a leg-up on its sequel for Syndrome’s mixture of evil antagonist that has a grand plan and plenty of incompetence. He loses sight of Mr. Incredible, and tends not always to think things through, making his time as a villain even better.
