Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse won’t hit theaters until June 2nd, 2023, but the new trailer just dropped on Tuesday. Finally, we get a new look at Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and Spider-Man 2099.

The new trailer for Across the Spider-Verse has plenty of new Spider-Men as well, even Issa Rae’s Spider-Woman. Along with this deep dive into Marvel lore, we also have a wonderful look at some more of the beautiful animation we were promised for the sequel. With all those Spider-People drawn in different styles, the whole Spider-Verse opened up for us.

The trailer also gave us a look at a new bad guy. We’ve been wondering who would play the antagonist for a while, and though Kemp Powers has said that The Spot will be the villain, this trailer showed us shots of Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099, attacking Miles Morales with his terrifying spider-talons. There’s a shot where it seems that Spider-Woman is teaming up with him as well.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

There are tons of Easter eggs and fun details in store. This is our breakdown for the new trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The Trailer is Filled With Spider-Verse Easter Eggs

     Marvel Studios

The trailer starts out with a lot of shots from the first movie, Into the Spider-Verse, when we see Gwen Stacy offer her hand to Miles to travel across the multiverse. We hear Miles’ mom Rio offer what sounds like a prayer to some unknown recipient to keep her son safe, as we watch Miles and Gwen travel through different worlds. This interdimensional form of travel may be a device in the Spider-Man comics called the Web of Life and Destiny. It is a means of traveling through the multiverse and connects all incarnations of Spider-Man.

This may be the way we’re able to see all of those different Spider-People in the second half of the trailer. Each one is part of this metaphysical web that the movie refers to as the Spider-Verse. In there, we watch Spider-Woman grind the wheel of her motorcycle into the face of Adrian Toomes aka The Vulture, who is drawn in the style of a classical Da Vinci blueprint. Spider-Man 2099 chases Miles through a dark space asking, “Who do you think you are, really?” It looks like he’s chasing him toward a spidery machine which might be this movie’s version of the Master Weaver, the great entity of Earth-001 which weaves the Web of Life and Destiny. We also see a bunch of different Spider-Men chase Miles through a weird interdimensional space.

The Spider-Man with a bag over his head is one of the most popular and probably the silliest character Easter egg that we can see. He almost catches up to Miles as he’s swinging through the multiverse. Though his costume looks a bit different, this guy might be a reference to “The Bombastic Bag-Man.” When Spider-Man discovered he had a symbiote on him, he was forced to relinquish his costume. The Fantastic Four gave him one of their suits, but it didn’t have a mask. So, Spider-Man had to wear a paper bag over his head, which is how he got his name. He’s also a playable character in the PS5 Spider-Man game.

Who Are All Those Spider-Men?

One of the most incredible shots in this trailer is of Miles Morales slinging webs through the Spider-Verse. It looks like he’s being attacked by a thousand different Spider-People. In that shot, there are a lot of different Spideys, and each one is animated in a different style.

We heard before from the directors that there would be a lot of different animation styles, but we didn’t expect there to be this many in one shot. There are tons of different Spider-characters, some from the comics and some from the video games. Some of them had been confirmed before the trailer dropped, but now we’re getting our first look at all the new ones.

We’ve seen our first look at some of the confirmed Spider-Men we’ve been told about as well. For example, this is the first time we got to see Spider-Woman aka Jessica Drew. Spider-Woman will be voiced by Issa Rae and everyone was excited to see her kicking The Vulture’s butt. It also looks like she was pregnant. This is the first time we’ll have a pregnant superhero on the big screen. She also appears to be aiding Spider-Man 2099 in whatever his goal is. There is a shot of her looking regretfully back at the camera as she follows him into some portal.

Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O’Hara is going to be voiced by the ever-popular Oscar Isaac. This Spider-Man comes from a universe in which he was a brilliant geneticist, and instead of getting bit by a radioactive spider, he got his powers from a dangerous genetic experiment. He has the ability to produce webbing from his wrists and not only does he have sharp talons on his arms that allow him to climb buildings, but he also has a set of poisonous fangs in the comics.

In the trailer, we definitely see the talons, but we might have to wait to see the fangs. Spider-Man 2099 is supposed to be a good guy in his universe, but in the trailer, he seems a bit more threatening than usual. Will he be an antagonist? Or will we sympathize with his goals despite how they might threaten Miles? We’ll have to wait until June to see.
