Spoiler Warning: You Seasons One, Two, and ThreeThe trailer for Netflix’s You season four part one just dropped, and Joe (Penn Badgley) is back at it again as he tries to escape his skeleton-ridden past and start anew across the pond. As is always the case with Joe, everything is unfolding according to plan until someone throws a wrench in the whole thing, setting in motion the demise of everyone around him. If the newest trailer is any indication, season four should follow the same pattern with a whole new set of characters. However, there are sure to be some unexpected twists and turns audiences can anticipate just as there were in previous seasons.
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Viewers last saw Joe reluctantly living the suburban life with Love (Victoria Pedretti) and their baby boy, Henry. Although, as the bodies quickly started to pile up due to Love’s jealousy over Joe and Joe’s obsession with the neighbor, Natalie (Michaela McManus), and his coworker, Marienne (Tati Gabrielle), the couple began to fracture yet again. Audiences will remember when Joe tried to kill Love for the first time in season two before she managed to survive after announcing her pregnancy.
However, the chickens ultimately came home to roost in season three. Love planned to murder Joe, but he was a step ahead of her, and ultimately beat her at her own game. He killed her, faked his own death, which he pinned on Love, left his son with Andrew (Chris O’Shea) and Jackson (Bryan Safi) to raise, and set the house ablaze before fleeing overseas. Thanks to Joe, season four of You is primed for anything to happen, and the trailer is jammed packed with new possibilities.
New City, New Joe
Netflix
As the trailer for You season four begins, viewers see Joe in London and teaching under the name Jonathan Moore. He’s a professor now and seems to fit into the role quite nicely, at least at the start. While striving to lie low, he somehow attaches himself to a group of “the most insane, damaged people on earth,” a circle of rich, spoiled socialites whose aspirations reach the heights of shallow popularity and drinking. True to form, Joe’s friends are people he actually despises.
While his elitist group of friends seems to be a necessary thorn in Joe’s side for the time being, he appears to be enjoying his current situation in London. He even tells viewers, “Turns out teaching’s fun and London’s not so bad.” However, despite Joe’s best efforts, his attempts at a new life quickly unravel, and he finds himself scrambling as always to cover his tracks and maintain control.
Marienne Makes an Appearance
As the trailer progresses, Marienne makes an appearance and to her surprise, accidentally crosses paths with Joe following the events of season three. However, keen-eyed viewers will notice the hue of Marienne’s scenes is different from the rest of the scenes throughout the trailer. Such differences usually indicate a flashback of some sort or Joe’s imagination. It’s more likely Marienne’s trailer scenes have already happened before the events of season four, which doesn’t bode well for the character.
Audiences will remember that Marienne fled to Paris with her daughter at the end of season three, unaware that Joe managed to follow her across the ocean. Unfortunately, all signs point to Joe stalking her as she attempts to take control of her new life. As viewers are well aware, Joe isn’t known for letting his obsessions go. Although maybe Marienne will be the first.
The Hunter Has Become the Hunted
By the end of the trailer, it’s clear that someone has discovered Joe’s past and is using it to stalk him. The tables have turned, and the hunter has now become the hunted. He receives a series of text messages from an unknown person clearly toying with him who eventually refers to Joe by his actual name. Subsequently, viewers watch as Joe discovers a series of newspaper articles displayed on a wall detailing all the bodies he’s left in his wake. He then proceeds to throw everything into a fire, which will surely have no effect on the culprit of such a display.
Despite Joe’s new environment and identity, he’s still the same person viewers know from seasons past, which means he’ll find another woman to obsess over. This time it appears to be a colleague and member of his elitist group of pals. Although, as members of the group begin to die, it’s clear that Joe is not the person responsible for the murders. At least that is what’s suggested to the audience. In fact, Joe seems to believe one of the elites themselves has taken up his favorite hobby and is more than likely the same person who’s been toying with him about his past. The trailer does feature a “friend” who threatens to murder Joe if he steals his spotlight, so maybe he’s the one pulling the strings this time. Although, in the end, Joe is sure to come out on top. He always does, at least so far.
Part 1 of You season four will be available to stream via Netflix on February 9, while Part 2 will be available the following month on March 9. In the meantime, watch the first three seasons now streaming on Netflix.
