The rumors are true, as Will Arnett has officially been cast as the killer clown Sweet Tooth in the Twisted Metal series. In 2021, long before the series was officially announced, it was reported that Arnett would voice Sweet Tooth in a live-action Twisted Metal adaptation. It has since been reported that he’s on board as a producer for the series, in the works at Peacock, but his rumored role was never officially confirmed.
Now, per Deadline, it has been announced that Arnett will indeed be portraying Sweet Tooth. Inspired by the video game character, the show’s Sweet Tooth is described as a “hilarious and terrifying hulk of a man, who is as emotional as he is cunning. A lover of chaos, this majestic rage-filled killer dons an ever-smiling clown mask and uses ‘Lost Vegas’ as his own personal kill-ground, all while he drives his infamous doomsday ice cream truck.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
This follows several prior casting announcements which first began with the news that Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) would be starring as John Doe. The series will also star Stephanie Beatriz (Encanto), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man: No Way Home), and Neve Campbell (The Lincoln Lawyer).
Arnett and Mackie are executive producing the series alongside Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions, as well as writer and showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith. Kitao Sakurai is also on board to executive produce in addition to directing multiple episodes. Twisted Metal is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Universal Television.
Twisted Metal Will Be Heavy on Both Action and Comedy
Sony
Twisted Metal is written by Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith and is based on an original take by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Isnpired by the video games, the series will include plenty of over-the-top, high-octane action, otherwise it wouldn’t truly be Twisted Metal. But is has also been described as a comedy series so we can expect for there to be plenty of humor within. You can read an official description of the series below.
The first Twisted Metal video game was released in 1995 and spawned a franchise with many spinoffs and sequels. There have been plans for years to make a live-action adaptation, and at one point, Crank co-director Brian Taylor was on board to write and direct a Twisted Metal movie. The waning popularity of the games led to the project getting shelved, but Will Arnett and pals seem to still see the potential in a live-action adaptation.
There is not currently a release date for Twisted Metal, but the series is in development for a release on the streaming service Peacock.
