There were perhaps a couple of cringe-worthy moments during Will Smith’s appearance on David Letterman’s Netflix show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, but one moment stands out. That moment was almost prophetic in nature, considering the interview occurred before what all transpired between Will Smith and Chris Rock at this year’s Oscars ceremony. First, when the 53-year-old pretended to throw a punch at Letterman when the host referenced his mother, Caroline Bright. Smith teased, “Don’t say nothing about my mother, Dave.” After the Oscar slap, a series of Will Smith projects were canceled or placed on hold and the actor received a ten-year ban from the Academy Awards.

On the new season of Letterman’s Netflix show, which premiered on Friday, May 20, Smith reflected on how there is a person you want to be, a person you want to be viewed as, and then there’s person you really are. Smith then admitted to viewing himself as a coward.

The Men in Black actor shared with Letterman that although he doesn’t usually use drugs recreationally, he did recount one occasion where he experienced a vision of “my whole life getting destroyed” after taking the South American hallucinogenic Ayahuasca.
Smith later said he could hear his daughter Willow calling out, and at that point, he stopped caring about anything else:
“I drank, and it usually takes about 45 minutes to kick in. And I’m sitting there, and you always feel like, ‘Maybe it won’t kick in this time.’ So, I’m drinking and sitting there, and then all of a sudden, it’s like I start seeing all my money flying away, and my house is flying away, and my career is going away. My whole life is getting destroyed.”
The fourth season of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction will consist of episodes featuring Kevin Durant, Ryan Reynolds, Julia-Louis-Dreyfus, Cardi B. and Billie Eilish, who opens up about living with Tourette’s Syndrome. See the video clip below:
“Then slowly, I stopped caring about my money, I just wanted to get Willow. I stopped caring about my house, I stopped caring about my career.”
As for Will Smith’s interview, the rapper-turned-actor concluded with how ‘Will Smith’ ultimately became a symbol of joy and fun, and when he showed up, he wanted people to be happy.
