Werewolf by Night is hitting the MCU like a jump-scare, and many wonder if the film will set up Marvel’s Midnight Sons. The Werewolf by Night trailer gave us a look at several new characters coming to the MCU, some of whom have been members in the past. The Midnight Sons are traditionally a group of Marvel superheroes with “a taste of damnation.” Everyone in the movie looks like they’re a little damned. If they’re able to survive Werewolf by Night, it’s possible we might see a few of them in the future.
The Midnight Sons are not far out of the realm of possibility. Many MCU characters introduced in Phase 4 have been members of the group at one time or another. This could be our chance to see more of Morbius, everyone’s favorite vampire. There have been several hints of demonic forces in the MCU as of late, and Werewolf by Night could be just another opportunity to cross into the hellish void that contains Marvel villains like Dracula, Mephisto and Lilith. The Midnight Sons could bring that extra touch of darkness the MCU seems to be chasing lately.

Werewolf by Night Could Plant the Seeds of the Midnight Sons

The Midnight Sons were originally a group of nine heroes (anti-heroes, really) brought together by Doctor Strange to combat Lilith, the dark mother of demons. Lilith had been sending her many children (the Lilin) out to do harm to the world, and many of these super-powered folks Doctor Strange gathered had come in contact with the Lilin at one point or another.
The members of this group were Blade, Morbius, Ghost Rider (Daniel Ketch), Johnny Blaze (who was human at the time but still had a Hellcycle), Frank Drake (a student of Van Helsing), Hannibal King (a vampire hunter; Ryan Reynolds played him in Blade: Trinity), Louise Hastings (a professor studying the Darkhold), Victoria Montesi (conceived by the power of the Darkhold), and Sam Buchanan (an Interpol agent assigned to protect Montesi). The group united to defeat Lilith above the arctic circle, under the midnight sun.
But these are not the most likely Midnight Sons to make an appearance in the MCU. Of the characters currently in the MCU, Morbius, Moon Knight, Doctor Strange, and Wong have all been Midnight Sons in the comics. Blade will join the MCU very soon, and whispers of Ghost Rider are mounting around She-Hulk’s fourth episode. Werewolf by Night will give us Jack Russell, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man-Thing, all of whom have been in various iterations of the Midnight Sons. Werewolf by Night is obviously centered around its title character, but with all of the monster hunters assembled in the trailer, it would be easy to include hints at other forces of evil from the Marvel Universe.
There are definitely opportunities to dig up a lot of lore from Marvel relating to things like hell and the Darkhold. There are even fan theories about how Werewolf by Night might take place in a pocket dimension or be affected by some extra-dimensional forces. And even though the Darkhold was destroyed, there is a storyline in Marvel Comics about heroes chasing down pages from the book of sin. Werewolf by Night might reveal a more dangerous villain than just a regular monster, one that comes from hell or has been cursed by the Darkhold.
What Would MCU’s Midnight Sons Look Like?
Sony/Marvel
Doctor Strange seems most concerned with the Darkhold of any MCU character, and he was the hero in the comics to assemble the Midnight Sons. If the MCU plans to create that particular team of slightly cursed heroes, Doctor Strange would have to be involved. So, what was he doing in the post-credits scene of Doctor Strange 2? He stepped through a portal with a mysterious woman we later found out was Cleo. Perhaps he was going off to confront a danger that could require a team of these particular heroes.
If the MCU kept to the comics’ archetype of “The Nine,” here’s the team-up we would most like to see: Blade, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, Man-Thing, Morbius, (and two outsiders) Punisher and Scarlet Witch. This would be an excellent opportunity to bring back Wanda, considering her close relationship with the Darkhold and demonic forces. She could be resurrected by some outside agent using a page from the Darkhold or might have survived that collapsing mountain by herself.
Frank Castle seems like the type to belong in a group like this. His personality fits right in with this gruff group of characters. Outfit him with a few silver bullets, and he’s good to go. With evil like Mephisto and the opening of hell continually being teased at the MCU, a group like this might need to be assembled before we all deal with Kang.
