Hogwarts is the most well-established school in the Wizarding World franchise, but not all wizards and witches studied there. There are many schools worldwide, and audiences are slowly but surely being introduced to them over time. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), we were introduced to Northern Europe’s Durmstrang Institute and France’s Beauxbatons Academy of Magic.

Then in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016), we were introduced to characters that had gone to America’s Ilvermony School of Witchcraft & Wizardry. Here we will be going over the best characters to have not sought an education in the hallowed halls of Hogwarts. We will rank them on their magical skill, impact on the story, and popularity throughout the franchise.

6 Viktor Krum

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Viktor would be a strong leader and representative, whether for his home country of Bulgaria in the Quidditch World Cup or his time as a champion for Durmstrang Institute in the Triwizard Tournament. Viktor would prove to be an excellent seeker for his team, as even though the Bulgarians lost to the Irish, it was Viktor who was considered the MVP after tricking the opposing seeker and catching the golden snitch to end the game.

It would appear, however, that most of Viktor’s skills would be in flying as his performance in the Triwizard Tournament had flaws, whether in his practiced magic or intelligence. While his actions in the first task are not shown on film, it is revealed that he had points taken away for not effectively disabling the dragon. And for the second task, Viktor had initially attempted to transfigure fully into a shark, but only succeeded in changing his head.

5 Eulalie Hicks

Lally would make her screen debut in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022) and would be an integral member of Dumbledore’s team. Lally is an alumnus of Ilvermony and has proven to be an exceptional academic; her wisdom being recognized by Albus Dumbledore after reaching out to him by letter. Lally would publish a book of her own and return to Ilvermony as their new Charms Professor.

Lally would use her clever charms to help combat Gellert Grindlewald’s followers when they began tracking her and her comrades down. Using the environment, she and Theseus would charm multiple objects, launching them at their opponents and stupefying them. Lally’s wits would even prove to take Newt aback at times.

4 Nagini

Nagini is a maledictus, a witch with a blood curse that causes her to transform into a snake. While her transformations are under control when we see her in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindlewald (2018), she has been permanently transformed into a snake by the time we see her again in the Harry Potter movies.

Nagini is a mysterious character with a significant gap in her known history. During her appearances in Fantastic Beasts, she seems aligned with Dumbledore and wants to do what’s right. But in the future, she ends up aligning with Lord Voldemort, much to the point that the Dark Lord trusts her to become one of his Horcruxes. This gap has led many to wish for her story to be further detailed in a spin-off film.

3 Fleur Delacour

Fleur Delacour would be known as an attractive young lady who had seduced most of the male student body during Beaxbaton’s tenure at Hogwarts. It would later be revealed that this may not have been entirely Fleur’s fault as she has magical Veela heritage, thus making her beauty and power over anyone attracted to women a magical genetic ability.

Fleur wouldn’t have a strong showing in the Triwizard Tournament. However, her shallow demeanor would soon be broken after Harry saves her younger sister, Gabrielle. Over time, Fleur would also come to be attracted to Bill Weasley, and the pair would fall in love. Despite Bill’s injuries from the werewolf Fenrir Greyback, Fleur would state that she didn’t care how Bill looked and that he loved him all the same. Fleur’s character growth would continue to shine as she would display her bravery, standing with her new family in the battle for Hogwarts.

2 Bellatrix Lestrange

Bellatrix is one of the many fan-favorite villains, thanks to Helena Bonham Carter’s excellent portrayal of the mad woman. Proudly proclaiming herself to be one of Lord Voldemort’s most loyal Death Eaters, Bellatrix would take her prison sentence in Azkaban with glee, calling for the return of the Dark Lord.

Bellatrix’s powers would prove deadly, with her having killed a member of her own family, knocking Sirius Black into the death veil. And while Bellatrix’s education remains unknown, it is implied that her family taught her how to torture, as she would mock Harry for his failed attempt at the Cruciatus Curse. Bellatrix’s vile ways would end after she attempted to murder Ginny Weasley and ended up in a duel with her mother, Molly Weasley. A mother’s wrath would prove to be what did Bellatrix in, as despite her cocky manner, she would be bested and killed.

1 Porpentina Goldstein

Tina Goldstein is a graduate of Ilvermony and would become a very successful Auror for the Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA). Taking her job very seriously, Tina also holds a soft spot for the under-represented as she had attempted to defend Creedence from his adoptive mother despite the risk it posed to exposing magic to No-Maj’s. This would cause her to be demoted to a lower position when Newt first meets her in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016).

While Tina has ambitions, her heart is also fond of Newt and his passion for protecting the less fortunate. The two would begin to kindle a romance as they worked together to save Newt’s pets and the Obscurial, Creedence. While Tina would eventually be promoted to the Head of the American Auror office, her new responsibilities would keep her out of the action of Dumbledore’s plot to stop Gellert Grindlewald’s ascent. Given how important a role Aurors play throughout the Wizarding World and the requirements needed just to gain entry into their ranks, it can be easy to see how Tina Goldstein is an excellent example of Ilvermony’s best.
