The Wizarding World has quickly expanded over the last twenty years into one of the world’s largest and most beloved franchises. With nearly a dozen movies produced along with theme-park rides, books, and a fan base that reaches every corner of the world, it’s conclusive to say that people love Harry Potter and his fantastic world of witches and wizards. Despite how large the franchise has become and how many different projects they continue to produce, the one avenue that the Wizarding World has yet to delve into is an original series.
We’re well aware that Harry Potter has done a couple of different television specials to honor the series (including a Hogwarts documentary special streaming on HBO Max this month). Still, the franchise has never produced an original series. Other franchises like the MCU, DCEU, Star Wars, and a few others have made the jump from cinematic releases to televised releases, and most have seen immediate success. There’s no reason to think the Wizarding World would be any different. With that in mind, a universe as large and widely-spread as the Wizarding World has many different topics that a show could revolve around. A series about the First Wizarding War would hands-down be the best choice.

Perfect Setting for a Television Show
Warner Bros. Pictures
As stated, the Wizarding World is a vast franchise that spans thousands of years thanks to characters like Godric Gryffindor and the other founding members of Hogwarts. The entire history of the Wizarding World isn’t completely filled, and a television show could technically start from scratch and do something completely original. However, that could be a mistake, especially with the first tv show that the franchise would produce.

Following Marvel and DC’s lead, a TV show about the First Wizarding War would allow the show to revolve around a time period, plot, and characters that many fans already have a decent amount of knowledge on. They know the what; they just don’t know the how. A television series could answer the how. The 1970s (when the war took place) was a very interesting time in England, with many families in poverty and hardship striking the nation. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine that the spill-over from a deadly magical conflict could have been the reason for such problems.
New & Old Characters
While the setting of the First Wizarding War is perfect for a show, the characters that could show up in the series would make it even better. As fans know, many of the parents of Harry’s classmates partook in the war alongside James, Lily, Sirius, Lupin, and all the other members of the Order of the Phoenix. However, chronologically speaking, they were teenagers and still in their final years of Hogwarts when the war started. Therefore, the series could begin at the start of the war and introduce a couple of new-key characters to the Wizarding World while bringing in some of the more-known characters in later seasons to keep things fresh and exciting.
Not only that but the first few seasons could still contain characters that we know but just haven’t gotten to see yet. For example, Molly Weasley’s brothers, Gideon and Fabian, fought and died in the war and have never been given an on-screen appearance. A series about the war could show them in their prime and give them an honorable death, as it could for many other prominent witches and wizards who died in the conflict.
Get Back to the Franchise’s Roots
The last Harry Potter film was released in 2011, and three other Wizarding World films have been released since then – all from the Fantastic Beasts series. The first was released in 2016, and the second followed in 2018. While both had respectable outcomes at the box office and did well enough to warrant further sequels, neither movie performed as well as the films that came before it, with 7 of the original 8 Harry Potter movies out-earning both Fantastic Beasts movies. The third Fantastic Beast movie is set to hit theaters this month with a premise that seems to stray away from beasts of any kind with a title that revolves entirely around one of the Wizarding World’s most famous characters – Dumbledore.

As much as fans love Dumbledore, it might be in the franchise’s best interest to try and lean away from the Fantastic Beasts plotline for a spell and allow the franchise to get back to its true roots. Now, even if the Wizarding World doesn’t decide to make a show about the First Wizarding War, fans would still love it if they could see any television series from the franchise in the near future.
