Since James Gunn and Peter Safran have stepped into their roles of leading DCU, many changes have fueled endless speculation about the franchise’s future. On the one hand, fans are devastated to learn that Henry Cavil will no longer play Superman, but on the other hand, many are also holding out hope that this sudden change in the DC Universe marks a fresh start.

Aside from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and The Flash, Wonder Woman 3 has been one of the most anticipated installments in the DCU, even though its prequel Wonder Woman 1984 was not well received by fans. Shortly after the prequel’s debut, Warner Bros. stated that a sequel was in the works. However, two years later, a turnover in DC Studios’ leadership delivered fans bad news: Wonder Woman 3 has been canceled since it did not fit with the new DCU’s unfolding vision.

Regardless of the official cancelation of the film, the DCU will still require Gal Gadot to play Wonder Woman in some capacity, whether in other films as a cameo or a sequel with a different story from the one intended by director Patty Jenkins. With that in mind, it is still feasible to see Wonder Woman 3 in some form in the new DCU envisioned by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

Incorporate in a Larger Universe

Even with the retooling of the DCU, it’s safe to believe that Gadot’s adventures as Wonder Woman are far from over. Fans adored the character who, with her demeanor and generosity, instilled confidence in females around the world. Without Princess Diana’s significant role, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s mission to create a brand-new DCU wouldn’t be nearly as interesting.

Since Gunn and Safran’s initial deal with the studio is only for four years, Wonder Woman 3 still might happen in the new universe, albeit with a completely different storyline. Given all the options, Gadot would make cameo appearances in upcoming films and television series while they construct a fresh Wonder Woman 3 storyline.

The Cancelation Could Lead to a New Justice League Icon

WB has been struggling to merge Justice League into the DCU, whether through uniting all the superheroes to battle Darkseid or by 2017’s Justice League Dark. Assuming there will be no Wonder Woman 3 in the rebooted DCU, how can we utilizeGadot to ensure the franchise’s success? While it is true that Cavil will no longer be appearing in the DCU, Gunn has already stated that he will not be replacing Gadot because she is an essential part of the much larger universe they have been visualizing.

In the comics, Wonder Woman has already led the Justice League Dark against Upside-Down Man, the creature that wants to reclaim all magic in the universe and blight the cosmos. Diana valiantly led the team and even unlocked some of Themyscira’s mysteries and secrets, paving the way for the development of a much more layered storyline. Furthermore, with so many potential antagonists already established, it would be a mistake not to utilize the character to deepen the story instead of repeating the faults of Wonder Woman 1984.

According to reports, Wonder Woman 3 was canceled solely because the studio was dissatisfied with the story Patty Jenkins presented. Prior to the formal announcement that Wonder Woman 3 will not take place under Jenkins’ direction, Gadot shared an optimistic message for fans on social media, fueling rumors that she is still in the retooled universe.

Due to the present state of the DC Universe, it is quite unlikely that Wonder Woman 3 will be released in the next few years. Following the departure of Jenkins, WB is in need of new story ideas and filmmakers to construct a new storyline that will add to the weight of the DCU. Since Gadot’s portrayal of Wonder Woman is still one of the DCU’s biggest successes, whatever Gunn and Safran have in store for her will be significant.

“A few years ago, it was announced that I was going to play Wonder Woman. I’ve been so grateful for the opportunity to play such an incredible, iconic character and more than anything, I’m grateful for YOU. The fans. Can’t wait to share her next chapter with you.”
