Wonder Woman has had a long history in DC Comics filled with amazing stories. However, many of these stories have yet to make it to the big screen. Despite the success of the first Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot, the movie never really played on any iconic storylines. Instead, it chose to be more similar to the iconic Christopher Reeves-led Superman. This interesting take on the character allowed Wonder Woman to flourish as a very successful woman lead film in the DCU.
Sadly, Wonder Woman 1984 wasn’t as lucky. The film was hated by critics and audiences, with people finding the feminist message to be very distasteful and poorly handled. The inclusion of Steve Trevor in the film also was poorly received by fans. So much so that it ended up earning a charitable 58% on Rotten Tomatoes with a B+ on Cinemascore. In comparison, Wonder Woman got an A. There definitely needs to be a change with the Wonder Woman films going forward, and with things at DC always in flux, that just may happen.
Stories from Wonder Woman comics have always been interesting, but the character doesn’t have many well-known runs as Superman or Batman do. But, today, we want to highlight some great Wonder Woman stories that people who love the character of Diana Prince could really get into on the big screen.
6 The Circle by Gail Simone
Warner Bros.
Gail Simone is well-known for writing stories with amazing women characters. Whether it’s her iconic run on Batgirl, Birds of Prey, and of course Wonder Woman, she has been an outspoken feminist as she has helped to pin the term “women in refrigerators” and has helped in changing the way we look at superheroes by giving us characters who are amazing but also very flawed. The Circle is meant to be a story that gets Wonder Woman back on track after a string of terribly written stories. Wonder Woman goes back to being the powerful fighting warrior who shows love to all those she comes across. It is also a story that reexamines Diana Prince’s birth and could be a great way to retcon a lot of the previous films without having to completely start from scratch. Such a story would be an excellent way to get fans back on board with the character after Wonder Woman 1984.
5 The Hiketia by Greg Rucka
4 The Lies and The Truth by Greg Rucka
During a big reboot in the comics known as DC Rebirth, Rucka returned to writing the character of Wonder Woman and wrote two storylines that were linked together into one. This storyline, The Lies and The Truth, saw Wonder Woman hunting for her home that had been lost as the character tried to figure out her place in the new DC universe, leading to her gaining a new origin story and effectively functioning as a reboot. This story also featured the amazing villain known as Veronica Cale, whom GregRucka created in his original run. Veronica was an amazing addition to mythos of Wonder Woman, and it would be amazing to see the new DCEU expand on her.
3 Challenge of the Gods by George Perez
During another massive reboot for the character, George Perez came onto the title. The writer is known for the iconic Crisis on Infinite Earths, which started this big change for many DC characters. Challenge of the Gods would be an amazing story for DC to adapt right now after the mild reviews of Thor: Love and Thunder. Much like that great comic book story, this one also deals with the failure of the gods as Diana Prince stands up to Zeus when he offers to marry her. If given the right creators, then this story has the potential to provide commentary on religion and gods better than the MCU could ever hope to achieve.
2 Eyes of the Gorgon by Greg Rucka
This Wonder Woman story turns Diana Prince into a political figure dealing with the world of man. In this comic, Veronica Cale and other Wonder Woman antagonists have already been firmly established as we watch them turn Diana’s world into turmoil. Medusa returns and begins wreaking havoc on man’s world, and it is up to Wonder Woman to put a stop to it. Eyes of the Gorgon has the potential to grab audience’s attention as we find a Wonder Woman who is both violent and loving. And after the first Wonder Woman movie, this would be a true return to form as we watch her show the world that she is truly an amazing hero for the world.
1 Spirit of Truth by Paul Dini
A beautiful story drawn by Alex Ross and written by Paul Dini, Spirit of Truth looks at Wonder Woman’s effect on the world and the hopeful aura she gives off. It examines what happens when lies are formed in man’s world and the importance of her lasso. It is also a great story that helps us understand why Wonder Woman is such an important character and a pillar for the entire DC universe. There are many gorgeous panels within this film that have the potential to look amazing if shown on the big screen. This storyline is meant to be a celebration of the character and all she embodies for men, women, and children.
