Showtime has ordered a third season of Yellowjackets. Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets turned out to be a big hit following its premiere on Showtime in 2021. It was up for many prestigious awards, including seven Primetime Emmy Awards, in addition to drawing high viewership. Last year, the show was renewed for season 2, which is set to arrive on Showtime in March 2023. Ahead of the renewal, it’s been revealed that the series has been given its season 3 order as well.

“With Yellowjackets‘ runaway success in season one and the pent-up anticipation for season two, we wanted to maximize the momentum by fast tracking season three now,” Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime and Paramount Media Networks, said in a statement, via THR. “The show’s ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it, including Ashley, Bart, Jonathan [Lisco], eOne and the Showtime team, for turning this into such a success.”

The acting in particular has also been highly praised by viewers and critics. Those accolades include Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci both getting their own Emmy nominations. Juliette Lewis and Tawny Newsome also star with the four playing survivors of their high school soccer team’s plane crash 25 years earlier. Sophie Nélisse, Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Thatcher, and Jasmin Savoy Brown play younger versions of the lead characters with the series also starring Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole, and Kevin Alves.

Hollywood legend Elijah Wood is also joining the cast for season 2 as a Citizen Detective named Walter who will challenge Misty (Ricci) in “ways she won’t see coming.” Simone Kessell and Lauren Ambrose are also series regulars for season 2, respectively playing the adult versions of Lottie and Van; the actors playing the teen versions, Courtney Eaton and Liv Hewson, have also been upped as series regulars.

Yellowjackets has managed to score a rare perfect rating of 100% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, another indicator of just how much of a hit the show has turned out to be. What happens in season 2 remains to be seen, though Ricci has promised that the second season is even better than the first, impressive given the high ratings the first season has garnered.

“I mean I just think the character’s so fun, Misty is so fun, and to see her in different scenarios and explore it more deeply, her psyche, I think is fun,” Ricci told THR in a previous interview about the show. “And you know I’ve seen the first two scripts now for season 2, and they’re f*****g crazy, and it’s going to be better than season 1. From reading it I was like ‘Oh my god. This is going to be insane.’ So I’m pretty excited.”

Season 2 of Yellowjackets is set to premiere on Showtime on March 26, 2023. Season 3 does not yet have a premiere date.
