It’s time to saddle up for the newest season of Paramount TV’s show, Yellowstone. Popularly known as one of the best cowboy soap operas, it’s no surprise that the show has gathered quite a fanbase over time. With the filming of season five currently underway, many fans have started talking about their favorite characters from Yellowstone. Meaning that there’s no better time than now to glance back at the series to discuss some of the most memorable characters from the series.

7 Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley)

     Paramount Global Distribution Group

Starting off with the black sheep of the Dutton family, there’s no denying that Jamie Dutton is no hero. Initially, Jamie seems likable enough, but as the series proceeds, one begins to question the morality of his actions. Jamie, with his neat suit and law office, is quite a contrast against the mud-covered boots of the other cowboys at the Yellowstone ranch. He’s the only Dutton who has managed to achieve a life outside his father’s ranch. He seems intelligent and is a breath of fresh air. Of course, this impression doesn’t last very long as the audience soon discovers his true colors. While sharp and intelligent, Jamie is selfish and greedy. He’s the sort of man who will do whatever is needed to achieve his goals. As his sister, Beth once stated, “There’s no right or wrong with you. That is what makes you truly evil.”

Beth isn’t wrong, Jamie truly is terrifying. His moral compass is non-existent, and he’s not above murder to get what he wants. Despite not having a very likable personality, there’s no denying that Jamie’s character is definitely memorable, to say the least. He’s definitely sparked some interesting debates among fans.

6 Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille)

If Jamie Dutton stands on one extreme of the morality scale, Monica Dutton stands on the other extreme. Much like the audience, Kayce’s wife Monica is an outsider in the Dutton circle, which means that she is able to provide a different perspective. She is often the one who is reminding the Duttons to reassess their actions and to rein them in when things begin to take a questionable turn.

Of course, being the moral center does come with a few consequences. The biggest is that at times Monica’s morality makes her a little annoying. On the other hand, it’s admirable to see her hold firm to her opinions despite being the only one to be at odds with the other. Whether it’s in favor or against Monica’s character, she’s definitely one of the more talked about characters from the TV show.

5 Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser)

Perhaps one of the more realistic character portrayals belongs to Rip Wheeler. Rip knows where his loyalty lies, (Yellowstone, obviously) and he does everything in his power to protect the people he cares about. Rip is no hero, and he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty when needed, but also unlike Jamie, who is driven by his own selfishness, Rip’s sole goal is to protect his people. On the surface, he seems like your textbook definition of a macho man, but as the series progresses, the audience is able to see through the cracks in his mask. Rip may seem tough, but he cares and also has his moments of weakness. He’s definitely one of the more serious characters, but he’s what is needed. His loyalty knows no bounds, and he is willing to even give his life for those he cares about, making him quite admirable.

4 John Dutton (Kevin Costner)

The head of the Dutton family, John Dutton is loved by the fans for his cool demeanor and his want to protect his family. John is definitely one of the more complex characters, making him quite memorable. As a landowner, he does well to keep level-headed and makes calculated decisions without letting his emotions get the best of him. There’s no denying that there have been moments when one begins to question John’s actions (which honestly, are not uncommon for most of the Yellowstone characters). However, given that Papa Dutton carries the weight of Yellowstone on his shoulders, it is understandable. Well, most of the time anyway. John has spent most of his life fighting to protect his land and his family, which has many fans hoping that the patriarch of the Dutton family gets his chance at happiness and peace.

3 Beth Dutton (Kelly Reily)

Beth Dutton may not be riding toward the enemy with guns in hand, but that doesn’t make her any less dangerous. Much like her husband, Rip, Beth knows where her loyalties lie and does everything in her power to protect those she cares about. Equipped with a sharp tongue and the ability to end her enemies with just her laptop, Beth is, in her own words, a tornado to reckon with. She’s strong and fierce, but she also has a softer, more sensitive side. Fans of the show are particularly fond of her relationship with Rip. In addition, it’s quite endearing to see her interact with the compassion and care around Carter, the son of an addict.

2 Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes)

Fans would unanimously agree that Kayce Dutton is the most likely Dutton of them all. Unlike the rest of his family, Kayce is happier to stay out of the family business and live with his wife and son. However, life has other plans for him, and whether he likes it or not, he becomes entangled in the whole cowboy politics. Not only is Kayce the most compassionate of all Duttons, but he’s also the only one who does not have any ulterior motives. This, of course, does not mean that Kayce hasn’t gotten his hands dirty when needed, but he understands the consequences of his actions and holds himself accountable (to an extent). Kayce’s relationship with his wife and son is also quite heartwarming. It’s hard to not root for the golden boy of the Dutton family.

1 Chief Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham)

What makes Chief Thomas Rainwater, perhaps the best character in Yellowstone is the fact that despite having an ongoing feud with John Dutton over the Dutton land, he’s not one to play dirty. Rainwater opts for taking the lawful and honorable way instead of opting for violence. There have been various instances in the series when Rainwater has put aside his differences to help his rivals. In Season four, he aids John in identifying the man who had been trying to harm the Dutton family. The Chief of the Broken Rock Reservation holds a certain integrity and charm which makes it hard to not like him.
