“This was a rare moment when you — I receive a lot of scripts to read these days and it’s pretty rare that you get through them in one sitting without being able to put them down. And I kept flipping back to the front just seeing that it was based on a true story and going, ‘This is absolutely incredible.’ There’s this flow to the writing and to the progression of the story that’s just really well paced and I don’t know, it’s gripping.”

He continues, saying he experienced something he never thought would be possible along his journey.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever should be a fun adventure to join, as Efron embodies the character of Chickie Donohue in the film based on a true story. The official synopsis for the film reads: “A man’s story of leaving New York in 1967 to bring beer to his childhood buddies in the Army while they are fighting in Vietnam.”

“Before you know it you’re on this journey, and you’re experiencing something that you never dreamed in a million years you’d get to be a part of. And I thought it was about something really powerful you know and the character of Chickie was just so likable and so, you know, had so much compassion and passion to accomplish his goal and to see his friends and to support them. So I mean I read it and just thought ‘This is too good to be true, sign me up.’

The film comes from Peter Farrelly, with previous credits including Hall Pass, Movie 43, and Green Book. The Greatest Beer Run Ever is based on a book of the same name written by John “Chick” Donohue and J.T Molloy, following Donohue’s eight weeks in Vietnam delivering beer to his friends and other soldiers in combat. Efron’s upcoming film is slated to release in select theaters, with The Greatest Beer Run Ever making its worldwide debut on AppleTV+ later this month, on Sept. 30.
