Zac Efron is in way over his head in the first trailer for The Greatest Beer Run Ever. The 34-year-old actor stars in the incredible true story of accidental hero Chickie Donohue, who decides to bring beer from his home in New York to his friends overseas in the Vietnam War. The film is an Apple TV+ original, slated to arrive in select theaters and on the streaming service on Sept 30.

Apple describes The Greatest Beer Run Ever as an impossible journey, all in the name of friendship. Chickie wants to support his friends fighting in Vietnam, so he does something wild — personally bring them American beer. What starts as a well-meaning journey quickly changes Chickie’s life and perspective. The picture comes from Skydance Media and is based on the book The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty and War by Joanna Molloy and John ‘Chickie’ Donohue.

Farrelly Says The Greatest Beer Run Ever Will Resonate With Audiences Today

A story following an average citizen who accidentally ends up in the Vietnam War sounds original enough; however, the addition of a literal beer run only adds to the madness. Director Peter Farrelly tells People Magazine that, much like today, the country was divided during the war. However, it wasn’t the soldier’s fault, as they were ‘18-, 19-year-old kids who were patriots and they were doing their duty.’

The Greatest Beer Run Ever, although set in the ’60s, will have social commentary that applies to our current state of the nation. Farrelly hopes to connect with audiences on that front and tell a story about ordinary citizens and their overseas soldier counterparts. So check your local theaters for The Greatest Beer Run Ever, or tune into Apple TV+ on Sept 30 to watch Zac Efron’s latest picture in the jungle.

“It resonates today, on a lot of levels. At that time in the United States, the country was as divided as it is today. It had, and [the division] was over Vietnam, and it shows that both sides had a point and I mean, obviously, the war sucked. It was a bad war. But the soldiers didn’t suck. The soldiers were 18-, 19-year-old kids who were patriots and they were doing their duty.”
