The family for the next generation of Spy Kids has been found. Per Deadline, Everly Carganilla and Connor Esterston will be the eponymous kids, while Zachary Levi and Gina Rodriguez will play their parents. They will star in the fifth installment of the franchise, which began in 2001 and was last seen in 2018 with the animated show Spy Kids: Mission Critical.

Carganilla was most recently seen on television in the series The Afterparty and The Chair. On film, she was most recently seen in The Haunted Man. Esterson was most recently seen in the tv series Attaway General and on Jimmy Kimmel Live! as himself. This will be his first feature film, according to IMDb.

Levi’s last film was playing the main character in American Underdog, which was based on a true story. He’ll also be seen in the upcoming DC Extended Universe film Shazam! Fury of the Gods, reprising his role as the titular superhero, who is the adult alter ego to Billy Batson (Asher Angel).

The synopsis for the reboot reads as follows. “When the children of the world’s greatest secret agents unwittingly help a powerful game developer unleash a computer virus that gives him control of all technology, they must become spies themselves to save their parents and the world.”

This new spy kids film is courtesy of Netflix, Skydance, and Spyglass. In addition to it, Skydance’s slate with Netflix will include the upcoming film Heart of Stone starring Gal Gadot, in addition to a sequel to the Netflix original film The Old Guard. Spyglass, of course, recently rebooted the Scream franchise, with the company’s revival of Hellraiser is expected to debut on Hulu later this year.

Series creator Robert Rodriguez will return to write, direct, and produce this new franchise installment. His son Racer Max, who previously assisted in the story process for The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D, will co-write the movie. This will be Rodriguez’s second family film with Netflix, following the 2020 family action movie We Can Be Heroes.

It has not yet been revealed if this new spy family will be relatives of the Cortez family. As was the case with the Wilson family in Spy Kids: All the Time in the World. It also hasn’t been revealed if, like in that film as well, we can expect any appearances from the Cortez family, such as Juni (Daryl Sabara), Carmen (Alexa PenaVega), Gregorio (Antonio Banderas), Ingrid (Carla Gugino), or Machete (Danny Trejo).
