With Henry Cavill out as Superman in the DCU, all hopes of future films featuring this beloved incarnation of the Man of Steel have gone down the drain. That obviously affects Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who spent six years negotiating behind the scenes for Cavill’s Superman to return in Black Adam, as he was planning a Superman vs. Black Adam battle. Additionally, with Peter Safran and James Gunn seemingly fizzling out the DCEU continuity in favor of evolving their vision of the DCU, chances are Zachary Levi may also be finished as Shazam following the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

There was a Superman cameo in the first Shazam! film, but a stand-in was used as the character’s face wasn’t shown. This prevented Cavill and Levi from sharing the screen in their respective superhero roles. For his part, Levi continues to look forward to possibly working with Cavill one day, though it will have to be with a different franchise. Perhaps that’s something that could happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

“Hope to catch you in another universe, sir,” Levi wrote on Cavill’s Instagram post announcing his Superman exit.

Is Shazam’s Run Coming to an End?

     Warner Bros. Pictures

Safran and Gunn are canceling many planned projects as their vision for the DCU gets mapped out, but for Levi, fans can still anticipate seeing him in another performance in the DCEU. Shazam! Fury of the Gods is wrapped and ready to hit theaters on March 17, 2023. But what comes next for Levi in that role? Safran and Gunn haven’t officially announced that the character’s run is over, but the odds of Shazam! 3 happening don’t seem very high, given that Cavill’s Superman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, and likely The Rock’s Black Adam are all going away. Even so, Levi remains hopeful he could do more in the role, as he’s friends with Safran and Gunn.

“I’m sure most of you know who James Gunn is, because he’s made all kinds of incredible movies and television shows, like Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, and stuff,” Levi is quoted as saying at Comic Con Portugal, via The Direct. “So he’s one of my bosses now, which is dope. Also, he’s a friend of mine, so that makes him even cooler.”

He added, “And then, Peter Safran, who is his partner, is my producer - he produces the movie Shazam!. So your question is, ‘If those are my two bosses, is there a plan and a future for Shazam?’ I would say ‘Yeah, I would hope so. I would hope so.’ Because those are my friends, and if they don’t have a plan, then they are not my friends anymore. No, sir.”

Apparently, Safran and Gunn should not expect to get a Christmas card from Levi next year if he comes to find out that Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the end of his run in the role.
