If there is one thing to say about Zack Snyder, it’s that he likes them long. Having released his four-hour version of Justice League on HBO Max after a lengthy campaign by fans, and his 148-minute Netflix zombie movie Army of the Dead, it is clear that Snyder likes to make sure his fans get everything they want from his movies and more. Now it looks like his upcoming Rebel Moon is going to be more of an epic than anyone thought as it is set to be a two part movie.
It is no secret that the new sci-fi movie was pitched by Snyder as a Star Wars movie, but was ultimately passed on by Lucasfilm. Now it has been picked up by Netflix as a stand-alone sci-fi blockbuster about a young woman who “becomes the face of a rising resistance against the galaxy’s conquerors.”
MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY
Snyder originally announced his Rebel Moon movie last year, and is set to start filming with Sofia Boutella in the lead role, with the rest of the cast including Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Rupert Friend, Stuart Martin, and Justice League star Ray Fisher, along with newly added Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman and Alfonso Herrera. Now as the movie heads into production, it has been suggested that Netflix will be releasing the movie as a two part story and not the single film that was expected.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is so big in scope that rather than have the kind of single hit that Snyder’s four-hour version of Justice League was for HBO Max, they will split the film into two separate movies, with the expectation of spin-offs to follow. If the dual release of Rebel Moon goes down as well as expected, and considering the response to Snyder’s Army of the Dead at Netflix that won’t be a problem, then we can expect to see another universe being created by the director.
Rebel Moon Does What Many Other Films Are Scared To Do
Netflix
So far there have been only a few details shared about Rebel Moon, but one thing that is clear is that its original idea as a Star Wars movie hasn’t held it back, but instead has seen Snyder do what many others choose not to and let the film run on its own merits. While it is very easy to tag onto a big franchises name, with many reboots of popular movies could quite easily be completely different films if they dropped the very tenuous link to a well-known name, Rebel Moon will stand on Snyder’s name alone.
It may be well known that the film was originally pitched as a Star Wars storyline, but now it has the chance to be something that it never would have as part of that universe; it can be its own unique story and build its own world. Snyder has never been one for putting out a movie without having some plan of where it could go next. With Army of the Dead spawning Army of Thieves and setting up its own universe with Planet of the Dead, Rebel Moon could provide Netflix with yet another Snyder-built IP that could run for a few years.
