Director Zack Snyder’s upcoming science fiction epic Rebel Moon really will live up to that description. According to Netflix producer Ori Marmur, the Rebel Moon saga is in fact so epic that it could never have been told in just one movie. Hence why it has been split in two. Check out what Marmur said of Rebel Moon while speaking with Variety below.
The comparisons to Star Wars have been made by everyone who has ever discussed Rebel Moon, with the project first starting out life as a Star Wars movie that Snyder pitched to Lucasfilm. Netflix is clearly loving working with Snyder, with the filmmaker and streaming service having already launched the Army of the Dead franchise. Both are eager to “push the envelope” even further, with both no doubt hoping to helm their own epic, Star Wars-esque series.
“Zack came in with so much passion. This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on Army of the Dead and we did things that others couldn’t do. We made a film and then a prequel and launched a live experience. With Rebel Moon he wanted to push the envelope again. When we saw how big the world he created was, we thought it would be better served as two pieces versus one film. It’s the kind of story that can continue to grow. He thinks of it as his take on making something like Star Wars.”

Directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, Rebel Moon centers on a peaceful colony on the galaxy’s edge. Threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius, the desperate civilians dispatch Kora, a young woman with a mysterious past, to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them challenge the regent.
“The movie’s about a planet not in our…it’s a space fantasy so there’s no Earth necessarily,” Snyder said of the project. “But there’s a community on a planet, a farming planet, and there’s a bunch of bad guys from other worlds armies are in the area and they need to be fed so they come to the village and ask for the village to feed them while they’re doing their war in that area of the galaxy. And of course, they are not kind about asking and the result will probably be the obliteration of the village itself. The villagers decide to fight and so they have to go out into the galaxy and collect warriors to help them.”
Led by Sofia Boutella as Kora, Rebel Moon features an all-star supporting cast that includes The Gentlemen star Charlie Hunnam, Justice League’s Ray Fisher, and Gladiator star Djimon Hounsou. Additionally, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes, Stuart Martin, Alfonso Herrera, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Staz Nair, Ray Porter, and Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins also star.
It has now been revealed that Rebel Moon will premiere on Netflix at the end of this year on Dec. 22, 2023. A sequel, currently known as Rebel Moon Part 2, has already been confirmed and is expected to be shot back-to-back with the first outing.
