Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon has started filming, and the director was quick to reveal some behind-the-scenes shots from the first day of shooting. Our first look at Djimon Hounsou in the film was also unveiled. The Rebel Moon project originally stemmed from a Star Wars pitch the director made many years ago, and having had it rejected by Lucasfilm, the Justice League director reworked the idea into his own original sci-fi epic that could well be the start of his own space-based franchise. Now after winning two fan voted Oscar Awards, fans are already wishing away time to see the final result when Rebel Moon comes to Netflix.

While the “Snyderverse” at Warner Bros. is now something that seems to have fallen into the past for good, despite numerous fan attempts to reignite the spark, the director has found a new lease of life with Netflix. Having already had a huge hit with Army of the Dead, which has spawned prequel movie Army of Thieves, animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas and will continue with Planet of the Dead, Zack Snyder seems to be well and truly on board the Netflix bandwagon with Rebel Moon also heading to the streamer as a reportedly two part movie.

While Synder has his critics, which has been proven by the Rotten Tomatoes scores for movies like Army of the Dead, his fan base is huge, and Netflix will be well aware of that when letting the director have pretty much free-reign over his projects. Army of the Dead became a bladder-busting epic movie from what could have been a very simple movie outline, and Rebel Moon looks to be on the same path.

Rebel Moon Is Reportedly So Big It Will Be Two Movies

While Rebel Moon was already expected to be a big budget epic, it was revealed that the latest whispers about the movie is that it is too big to be contained in just one film. While Snyder’s Justice League cut clocked in at around 4 hours, the question many people have is just how long is Rebel Moon going to be?

Outside of this, there is also an expectation that if the film is the success Netflix are expecting, this will be the start of a whole new IP for the streamer, and will sit alongside the likes of The Witcher in getting a number of spin-offs and sequels. Although all of this may be getting a bit ahead of where we are now, the power of Snyder has been seen enough for everyone to know that there is a good chance of all of this happening and more.

Although Rebel Moon began life as a Star Wars pitch, and many of Snyder’s fans are already hailing the movie the biggest competition the Lucasfilm space opera has had before a single second of footage has been seen, the director will be making sure that he tells his own story on this movie. Although previously released details sound very “Star Wars” in their theme, no one is expecting him to simply take the lazy option of ripping off the franchise. All will be revealed when Rebel Moon arrives sometime supposedly next year.
